This Website is now speech-enabled, which means that users of our Website can
download free software onto their personal computers.
The free software is called Browsealoud,
and has presence on over 2000 Websites in the United Kingdom and United States.
These are mainly government and educational institutions but include the BBC,
Google and a number of UK local authorities.
Browsealoud is a Windows Browser
plug-in designed for use with Internet Explorer 4 upwards or Netscape
Navigator. If you install the Browsealoud
plugin on to your PC, you can have the web pages on the Object
Coordination website read to you (and other sites that are
Speech-enabled).
This may help those people who have a good understanding of the English language
but do not find reading online easy.
Downloading Browsealoud
When you follow the download Browsealoud
link you will be taken to an external site where you will find full
instructions to carry out the download and installation. A browsealoud icon
will be placed in your system tray which is at the bottom right of your
browser.
You can open the Browsealoud application
by double clicking the icon. You will find that you can update browsealoud and
customise it to suit you. You can select from a list of voices and adjust the
way you hear the voices by changing the pitch and speed. You may also wish to
download some British voices.
To download British voices
Open the Browsealoud application
and Click on the updates tab. Choose the option to Get voices, updates and
Help. You can then download 2 British voices, one male and one female.
Regular Updates
More Websites add their names to the Browsealoud
enabled sites and Browsealoud will
prompt you to make regular updates. This is quick to do and will ensure that
you will be able to read all those sites who have registered with
Browsealoud
.
